Oyster | Environmental Protection Officer | Part-Time

A Lancashire Local Authority is experiencing a high workload in their Environmental Protection service due to staff shortages and increased demand. The team is looking to bring in additional support on a part-time basis to manage statutory nuisance cases and similar responsibilities.

The position is for a part-time Environmental Protection Officer. The successful candidate will help manage statutory nuisance cases, including issues such as noise complaints (e.g., barking dogs), smoke, and other environmental concerns. The role is not highly specialised, but local knowledge is preferred. The company seeks someone who can quickly integrate into the team and handle a significant caseload with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and manage statutory nuisance complaints (e.g., noise, smoke)
  • Handle caseloads related to environmental protection issues within the district
  • Liaise with members of the public regarding environmental concerns
  • Prepare reports and maintain accurate records of investigations
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to ensure effective service delivery

Requirements

  • Experience in Environmental Protection or similar local authority roles
  • Ability to investigate statutory nuisance complaints (noise, smoke, etc.)
  • Local area knowledge preferred but not essential
  • Ability to work independently and manage own caseload efficiently
  • Strong communication skills for public interaction and report writing

Salary and benefits

  • Part-time: approximately 16–18.5 hours per week (2–2.5 days/week)
  • Hourly or pro-rata pay structure; indicative rates discussed per hour but subject to budget approval
  • Flexible working arrangements may be available
  • Potential for quick onboarding—system access within one week
