  • Rate: £350 per day (Umbrella)
  • Contract Type: Interim, Full-Time
  • Location: Essex
  • Contract Length: Initial 12 Months
  • Working Arrangements: Hybrid working with a minimum of 3 days per week on site

Clerk of Works – Overview

  • An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Clerk of Works to join a leading social housing provider on an interim basis. Working across major residential refurbishment and fire safety programmes, you will provide independent quality assurance, compliance monitoring, and technical inspection services to ensure projects are delivered to the highest standards.
  • This role is critical in safeguarding quality, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting the successful delivery of investment works within occupied residential properties. The position combines office, home, and site-based working, with regular inspections across live construction environments.

Clerk of Works – Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake regular site inspections across major residential refurbishment and fire safety works programmes.
  • Verify compliance with drawings, specifications, Building Regulations, contract documentation, and fire safety requirements.
  • Maintain detailed inspection records, site reports, and photographic evidence.
  • Identify defects, quality concerns, and non-conformances, ensuring issues are reported and addressed promptly.
  • Review contractor RAMS, programme sequencing, and resident protection arrangements.
  • Attend site progress meetings and provide technical advice and observations.
  • Monitor fire stopping, compartmentation works, and life safety installations.
  • Work closely with Resident Liaison Officers to address resident concerns relating to quality or safety issues.
  • Support Project Managers by identifying technical risks and programme concerns.
  • Ensure a robust audit trail is maintained for regulatory, leaseholder, and compliance purposes.
  • Prepare regular inspection and progress reports.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and lessons learned processes.
  • Assist in the production of technical requirements, project standards, and position statements where required.

Clerk of Works – Applicant Essentials

Essential

  • Strong knowledge of building construction and construction quality standards.
  • Experience undertaking Clerk of Works, site inspection, or quality assurance duties within residential refurbishment programmes.
  • Experience working within occupied residential environments.
  • Understanding of fire safety requirements, compartmentation, and passive fire protection works.
  • Knowledge of Building Regulations and relevant British Standards.
  • Ability to produce clear, structured technical reports and inspection records.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to identify defects, monitor quality standards, and challenge poor workmanship where necessary.
  • Full UK driving licence and ability to travel to sites as required.

Desirable

  • Relevant construction, surveying, or building-related qualification.
  • Membership of a recognised professional body.
  • Experience within a social housing provider environment.
  • Knowledge of major planned investment and capital works programmes.
  • Experience inspecting fire risk assessment remedial works.
  • Understanding of resident engagement within occupied refurbishment projects.
