We are currently recruiting for an experienced Prosecutions Lawyer to join a busy Local Authority legal team. This role offers the opportunity to undertake a varied and interesting caseload of criminal and regulatory prosecutions, working within a supportive public sector environment with flexible remote working arrangements available.

The Role

The successful candidate will advise and represent the Authority across a broad range of prosecutions and enforcement matters, working closely with internal departments, enforcement officers and external agencies.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a caseload of criminal and regulatory prosecutions on behalf of the Authority
  • Advising on enforcement matters relating to environmental health, trading standards, licensing, housing and public protection
  • Preparing cases for court, including drafting summonses, witness statements and legal notices
  • Conducting advocacy in the Magistrates’ Court where appropriate
  • Advising officers on evidential requirements, procedure and enforcement powers
  • Supporting investigations and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks
  • Liaising with external counsel, courts and partner agencies where required
  • Providing practical and timely legal advice to officers and senior stakeholders

About You

Applications are welcomed from qualified Solicitors, Barristers or Chartered Legal Executives with relevant prosecutions or regulatory litigation experience.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience handling criminal or regulatory prosecutions
  • Strong knowledge of criminal procedure and evidential requirements
  • Advocacy experience or confidence managing contested matters
  • Excellent organisational and case management skills
  • The ability to work independently and prioritise a busy workload
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities

Previous Local Authority or public sector experience is desirable, though candidates from private practice or other regulatory backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
