Have you ever got to the end of an interview, been asked if you have any questions and then your mind goes blank? This is your chance to stand out; have some inspiring questions in mind and find out if the job is really right for you.

Below you will find some examples of the types of questions you should be asking the employer to ensure you’ll be happy in your new role.

What will my biggest challenge/focus be for the first 3months?

Not only does this signify that you are interested in the position that you are being interviewed for, but, it also shows that you are imagining yourself in the post – both attractive qualities to a potential employer. It allows you to find out information beyond the Job description; you can really get a feel for the type of position you are likely to find yourself in and assess whether or not it fits with what you are looking for. Remember interviews are a two way process!

What has your journey been like within the company/organisation?

Where culture is so important to an organisation, understandably a client can be very particular about the type of employee they hire. Employers are becoming ever more stringent and increasingly we are seeing clients interviewing the candidate multiple times with different people. As a candidate, you may feel that by the 2nd or 3rd stage you know everything about the organisation and there is not a lot left to ask. That is why the question above is a really good one and one that can be used at every stage. It’s to show a personal touch that means you are actively interested in your interviewer. For me, this question goes a long way!

Where do you think the company will be in the next 5 years?

This is an eye opener question for the employer – you’re showing you are not just another number but that you want to be there to make a difference and help the company grow. It’s a sign of your future intent. The question will hopefully allow those interviewing you to open up and tell you what they are working towards. Make sure the company is growing so you can grow with the company.
